Lexington K-9 Sam dies from heat-related illness
Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said K-9 Sam died from an apparent heat-related illness following a medical emergency during a training session. Sam’s handler Deputy Saunders noticed the 2-year-old dog was in distress after a training track and rushed the animal to the veterinarian for care.
The heat index in the Midlands had been hovering around 100 degrees in the shade all week.
Koon said the department will be evaluating its K-9 training program as a result of Sam’s death.
